Have you ever asked yourself what the day of judgment would be like as you stand before God ready to give an account of your life. Let’s paint a picture of that day as it arrives and you hear the bailiff cry “Order in the court”. Today, we are going to take a leap forward to that day in the future. What would be running through your mind? Are you ready for what you will hear?
The day has come for you. Life in this world has ended and now it’s time to bring an account of your life. This is the day when your eternity would be decided. On your way to the courthouse, you run you life through your mind as you look for anything that would convict you before the Judge. Thinking your safe, you enter into the room confident that all would turn out well. As you do so, you look around to take an inventory of your surroundings. As you sit yourself at the bench, the doors open to the courtroom and you are summoned to enter. You walk down the aisle and seat your self at the defense table. A little nervous, you look around and notice that the opposing attorney has already arrived. Wow! what a character. Fear suddenly snatches away your confidence and calmness, as the prosecutor stares back at you, sneering at you with utter contempt. Chills rush down your spine. you have never experienced such evil, and here you are staring directly in its eyes. You are no longer confident. Fears overtakes you. Doubting yourself, you look around and there sitting beside you is your attorney. Something was calming about this gent. You couldn’t put your finger on it, but something was so familiar. The vision of His face flooded your mind as you tried to place the face. Where had you seen this man before? As you are lost in thought, the courtroom doors fly open and in walks the Judge. You couldn’t believe your eyes. ou have never witnessed such magnificence. Clothed regally, He strolls to the bench right before you.
All within the courtroom rise in respect. The total courtroom is in awe, not to mention you couldn’t peel your eyes away either. As He prepares to seat Himself, He shouts, “Order in the Court”. The courtroom begins to quiet as He seats Himself upon the bench. Looking up, He begins. Suddenly the reverent awe is broken, as the opposing attorney bolts up with a shout. Excited to begin listing the charges, he introduces himself, “I am Satan and I am here to prove that this man should be sentenced to hell.” In shock, you listen as he brings to light every sin you ever committed. Your head drops as you listen to each and every word. As each word beats upon the walls of your heart, you sink down in your chair, knowing that every accusation spoken rung true. You had no defense. How did this man remember all this, when you had forgotten most of it yourself, but here he was bringing back all that had been buried away. To make matters worse, there sits your attorney in total silence, never speaking a word of defense in your behalf. Had He lost His mind? Wasn’t He going to fight, wasn’t He going to say something? How could He just sit there and say nothing? Lost in the moment, Satan finishes with a fury, shocking your mind back into reality. What you would hear at that moment would sear a scar of disbelief into your subconscious. “This man is guilty of all the charges beyond the shadow of any doubt. I charge the court to bring back the verdict of an eternity in hell” Confidently he had successfully pleaded his case, he sat down.
Doom was in the air. You thought running rampant look to your Attorney as you see him rise to speak, requesting that He be permitted to approach the bench. His request is granted, but not without strong objection from Satan himself. You hadn’t noticed before as your Attorney was seated when you entered. Something odd struck you, as you watched Him approach the bench. He was clothed in such regal magnificence, walking with such grace and confidence. There was something unnerving about this man. It was as if you knew Him, and yet from where? Where had you seen Him? Then with a quickness, you remembered. This was Jesus, your Lord and Savior. He was your Attorney, representing you before the Judge.
Facing the Judge, Jesus greets Him, “Hello Father”. Turning to address the Satan, Jesus continues, “Satan, you are correct in all you charge. This man is guilty of all you say and should be sentenced to hell. I also agree that the wages of his sin are death.” At that very moment, Jesus turns to His Father with outstretched arms and there He continues to speak. “Father, this man came to me and believed in Me. Check the book. His name is written within its pages. You words are law and we stand upon them. No one shall snatch this man from my hand.” Jesus walks back to his seat and there he finishes, “The Defense rests as the price for his penalty has been paid in full. I have done it all”.
All around the courtroom, voices rise in disbelief. What were they hearing? How could this be? The man is guilty of every charge and found innocent? The Judge stands and pound His gavel to bring order in the court. As the tension heightens, the Judge bellows, “this man is free to go as his sins have been paid in full. Case dismissed”. As relief rushes over you, Jesus smiles and from His mouth He speaks the words that will never be forgotten, “All who come to Me for representation have received the same verdict.”
When that day comes, what will your verdict be? Do you have Jesus as your attorney? Have your penalties been paid in full?
